FREE LIVES (SA)
Free Lives is an independent game design studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. Building a better future, even for crappy human beings.
Free Lives was started in April 2012 by Evan Greenwood, following his success on Pocket RPG (developed for Crescent Moon Games). In the same month, Free Lives entered Ludum Dare #23 Game Jam with Broforce (at the time called RamBros), and won First in “Humour”, Second in “Fun” and Fourth in “Graphics”. The team loved the game concept and decided to focus their efforts full time into releasing it as a full commercial game. The Broforce “Brototype” was released in October 2012 to fantastic feedback – Eurogamer pronounced “Broforce is what the Expendables game should have been”, while Kotaku said “Bro’s are blowin sh* up in Broforce, and it looks Awesome”- and support has continued to pour in, with Broforce showing a strong climb up the formidable Greenlight ladder.
The team, now consisting of Evan Greenwood (Creative Director), Ruan Rothmann Programmer), Jarred Lunt (Artist), Duncan Greenwood (Animator), Richard Pieterse (Junior Programmer) and Shaz Strauss (Producer), like to keep busy. They entered another Ludum Dare in December 2012, coming First Overall with their cooperative online multiplayer “Ore Chasm”, as well as Second in “Audio” and “Fun”. Early in 2013 they followed on their success by winning the Grand Prize for the Ouya CREATE Game Jam with “Strange Happenings on Murder Island”.
The latest, updated Brototype was released in April 2013, with the official prequel scheduled for release in mid 2013, and the full game aims to launch at the end of 2013. Evan has been invited to judge and present a talk at the A MAZE. Indie Connect Festival, where Broforce will be on show.
