Workshop
Target Audience: anyone interested in game design, storytelling or mobile games Requirements: fluency in English
This workshop focuses on the development of a game or interactive narrative which is experienced solely through the act of walking.
While videogames are typically designed with a marked of emphasis on the screen and mostly require the player's full attention, the widespread availability of mobile devices – and someday, smart clothing – prompts us to conceive different forms of digital game and interactive storytelling. Such experiences do not assume that the player is comfortably positioned in front of a screen, gamepad in hand, but rather that he/she is on the move, aware of and navigating within the physical world.
This workshop offers a creative space for designing and prototyping such an experience. In the spirit of the Ludic Interface European Masters programme, participants will work together to brainstorm and experiment with a possible concept, supported by a technical framework consisting of a smartphone and a pair of wireless pressure-sensing sneakers.
Guided and assisted by the facilitator, participants will jointly develop a game or narrative that can be enjoyed simply by walking. The experience will focus on audio as a delivery method, with the mobile device handling the information sent by the sneakers and running the game/narrative events accordingly, as audio output.
The workshop is aimed at anyone who wishes to exercise a creative role in the development of new digital gaming and storytelling systems. English language fluency is a must. No technical skills are required, but familiarity with audio-editing software (such as Audacity) and/or basic programming skills is a plus.
